the
truth
about
bully
breeds
All dog breeds have certain traits and
tendencies that make them a great fit for some homes, but not so great for others.
The dogs we think of as “pit bulls — breeds like the American Pit Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier and the mixed-breed dogs related to them — aren’t for everyone. But that’s true of any dog breed.
Bully breeds are smart, strong, stubborn and eager to please their humans. They take work.
You may have heard bad stories about bully breeds. But to get the full picture of these dogs, it's also important to know that many work with the military and police or as service animals — and that they can thrive as pets in the right homes.
And you should know that many of the stray dogs who live on Houston's streets and who get euthanized in our city are bully breeds — a fate they don't deserve.
If you're thinking about adopting a bully breed, you can meet some dogs who need homes on this page. Or you can contact us to talk more about whether this type of dog is a fit for you.
But adoption isn't the only way to help. Sponsoring a dog or volunteering with ADORE Houston are just two of the ways you can make a difference for these often misunderstood dogs.
